In the context of the election for the Portuguese Parliament, which will take place on January 30th 2022, voters residing abroad should verify and, if necessary, update the address associated with their Citizen Card, which may be done in person or online. This verification is essential to ensure that the right to vote abroad can be exercised without constraints.

The address updated on the Citizen Card is only effective for voter registration if its confirmation occurs until the 60th day before the date of the election or until the day of the publication of the Presidential decree scheduling the election, if it is posterior.

At www.eueleitor.mai.gov.pt, citizens can obtain the mobile digital key associated with their citizen card and, after registering, they can verify their address.

The address update can be done at the consular office or online at https://eportugal.gov.pt/servicos/alterar-a-morada-do-cartao-de-cidadao (using the mobile digital key or the Citizen Card + PIN).

It should be noted that the change of address made in person at the consular office or consular section takes immediate effect, while the online change is subject to the aforementioned confirmation by the citizens themselves, upon receipt of a letter at the current address containing several codes.

It should also be noted that voter registration will be inactive for voters whose Citizen Card have been expired for more than 24 months. However, inactive registrations can be reactivated by obtaining or revalidating the Citizen Card, or through voluntary re-registration. The reactivation only takes effect in the voter registry if it occurs until the 60th day before the day of publication of the Presidential decree scheduling the election if this is later.

Citizens who have an identity card with an address abroad as their identification document may verify the place of their voter registration at the consular post or consular section, or by consulting the website www.recenseamento.mai.gov.pt. These citizens can register with the voting commission in their area of residence (in the consular section of the Embassy or in the consular post) until the 60th day before the election date or the day of publication of the Presidential Decree scheduling the election, if it is published after the 60 days.

Regarding the form of voting, citizens living abroad can exercise the right to choose between voting in person or voting by post, until the date of publication of the Presidential Decree scheduling the election, or in person at the respective voting commission (in the consular section of the Embassy or in the consular post). If the voter does not exercise his or her right of option, he or she will have to vote by mail.

Finally, it is important to note that consular registration does not mean that the citizen is registered in the electoral register.
